Three hours away
The call isn’t about how Mom’s day was. It’s about whether she picks up.
This is Emily. Her mother lives three hours away, in the house Emily grew up in. Every night at 9:40, Emily calls. Not because anything’s wrong. Because she doesn’t know that anything isn’t.
Emily, 47. Her mother Maria, 82.
A kitchen late at night, lit only by a phone lying face-up on the counter. A woman stands at the counter’s edge, her arm resting beside the phone without reaching for it. A wall clock reads 9:40. A cup of tea has gone cold, and two children’s drawings are pinned to the fridge behind her.
